Journey to

Shadow Mountain

The Challenge

Journey to Shadow Mountain is a sci-fi fantasy movie aimed at young adults ages 8–12 and a predominantly female audience. The production company plans to promote the movie two months before its release date in theaters.

To keep with the movie's style and target audience, a promotional poster would be created, along with a scavenger hunt quest that anyone can complete no matter where they live and a limited-edition candy that comes in a purple pouch keepsake related to the movie.

The Poster

Consideration of the central theme and movie premise determined the direction for creating thumbnails and evolving the best ones into roughs. Inspired by Stephen King's books and the show Dr. Who, a rough was chosen with the client's approval, and an initial composite was created. The composite continued to evolve as color and blending adjustments were made, images were added, and typefaces and formatting were chosen.

Final Poster

Final Poster

The result is a visually impactful and attention-grabbing movie poster that evokes a sense of adventure and mystery. I tried to divide the two worlds by incorporating contrast through color and tone. The contrast creates a strong focal point and visual hierarchy that draws the viewer in. The roughened and uneven appearance of the main type was chosen further to enhance a sense of adventure with some peril.

Scavenger Hunt

The scavenger hunt contains “worn” parchment, directions, and clues. The clues can be solved within areas around the house or local community areas that the guardians/parents can take them to, creating a fun day for both child and adult. The parchment includes a wax seal and watermark insignia that connects to the movie.

Scroll Text & Emblem Roughs

Final Scroll

The original scroll was extraordinarily yellow and unnatural in appearance. Through adjustment layers, a more suitable tone was established. When young adults come to get their scroll from the movie theater, it will be sealed with a real wax seal utilizing the watermarked emblem on the scroll.

Limited Edition Candy & Keepsake Pouch

Completing the scavenger hunt will earn participants a movie poster and a limited-edition candy called Portal Pops. The candy comes in a purple velvet pouch with the portal and emblem on the front.

Creating Connection
